Key Stage 3
Year 7
Module 1 : Greetings, introducing yourself, school objects, alphabet, numbers up to 31, ages, dates, classroom instructions, colours.
Module 2 : Brothers and sisters, family, pets, describing personality, describing appearance.
Module 3 : Where people live, types of houses, rooms in a house, describing your bedroom, saying what you do and don’t do at home, telling the time, numbers up to 69.
Module 4 : Places in a town, giving and understanding directions, saying where you are and where you are going, arranging to go out, ordering drinks and snacks, prices,
Module 5 : Morning routine, school subjects, giving opinions and reasons, school timetables, activities after school, numbers up to 100.
Module 6 : Sports and games, musical instruments, saying what you like to do, leisure centre activities, holiday activities.
Year 8
Module 1 : Talking about yourself, families, jobs, talking about where people live, weather.
Module 2 : Saying what you like doing, sports, talking about activities with friends, TV programmes, saying what you did.
Module 3 : Making and reacting to invitations, making excuses, talking about clothes, buying clothes, saying where you went.
Module 4 : Food you like and dislike, breakfast and lunch, preparing for a party, buying food, evening meals.
Module 5 : Countries and nationalities, talking about holidays, describing a holiday centre, finding out about a holiday destination, talking about a past holiday.
Module 6 : Talking about friends, pocket money, talki9ng about gadgets, holiday plans, talking about future plans and dreams.
Year 9
Module 1 :Talking about what you watch on TV, going to the cinema, describing yourself and others, talking about what you like reading, talking about what you did last weekend.
Module 2 : Planning what you are going to do, saying what is going to happen in the future, future careers, why languages are important.
Module 3 : Parts of the body, talking about illness, saying what is wrong, healthy living, understanding and giving advice, keep-fit activities.
Module 4 : French-speaking sportspeople, describing others, saying what you think of someone, saying what you and others did.
Module 5 : Learning about a region of France, travel arrangements, hotel accommodation, describing a visit to an attraction or event.
Module 6 : Schools in different countries, young people and work, tackling world hunger, religion in France, human rights activists.
Key Stage 4
French GCSE
Exam Board: AQA
Course Structure: this is a 2 year course which is divided into 4 Units; Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
Assessment
40% Examination (Listening 20% and Reading 20%)
60% Controlled Assessment (Speaking 30% and Writing 30%)
Contexts: Health, relationships and choices, free time, the Media, holidays, home and local area, environment, school/college and future plans, current and future jobs.
Urdu GCSE
Exam Board: Edexcel
Course Structure: this is a 2 year course which is divided into 4 Units; Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
Assessment: 40% Examination (Listening 20% and Reading 20%)
60% Controlled Assessment (Speaking 30% and Writing 30%)
Contexts: Media and Culture, Sport and Leisure, Travel and Tourism, Business, Work and Employment.
Other Language GCSEs
Students who have other Home Languages are encouraged to take a GCSE exam in those Languages. In the past, students have successfully completed GCSE exams in Arabic, Panjabi, Bengali, Polish, Russian, Dutch, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and Spanish.
Key Stage 5
French A Level
Exam Board: AQA
Course structure: this is a 2 year course consisting of 4 Units, Units 1 and 2 making up the AS Level qualification, and Units 3 and 4 making up the A2 qualification.
Assessment:
Unit 1 – 70% of AS Level, 35% of A Level- assessed by means of a 2 hour written exam testing Listening, Reading and Writing skills.
Unit 2 – 30% of AS Level, 15% of A Level – assessed by means of a 35 minute exam testing Speaking skills.
Unit 3 – 35% of A Level – assessed by means of a 2.5 hour written exam testing Listening, Reading and Writing skills.
Unit 4 – 15% of A Level- assessed by means of a 35 minute exam testing Speaking skills.
Contexts: Media, popular culture, healthy lifestyle, family/relationships, environment, multicultural society, contemporary social issues and cultural topics.
Urdu A Level
Exam Board: Edexcel
Course Structure: this is a 2 year course consisting of 4 Units, Units 1 and 2 making up the AS Level qualification, and Units 3 and 4 making up the A2 qualification.
Assessment
Unit 1 – 30% of AS Level, 15% of A Level- assessed by means of an 8-10 minute exam testing Speaking skills.
Unit 2 – 70% of AS Level, 35% of A Level – assessed by means of a 2.5 hour exam testing Listening, Reading and Writing skills.
Unit 3 – 35% of A2 Level, 17.5% of A Level – assessed by means of an 11-13 minute exam testing Speaking skills.
Unit 4 – 65% of A2 Level, 32.5% of A Level- assessed by means of a 2.5 hour exam testing Research, Understanding and Writing skills.
Contexts: Youth culture, Healthy lifestyle, the World around us, Education and employment, Customs and Religions, National and International events, Literature and the Arts.
Teaching and Learning
Students are taught Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing skills in Language lessons. A wide variety of teaching methods are employed to develop these skills, such as:
· Listening to native speakers
· Use of songs
· Speaking in pairs
· Role-play
· Conducting class surveys
· Use of mini-whiteboards
· Interactive whiteboard games
· Reading comprehension
· Card games
· Team games
· Writing in French
· Reading aloud
· Grammar activities
· Using a dictionary
Assessment
At Key Stage 3, students complete 6 modules of work each year and are formally assessed at the end of each of these modules. The end of module assessment tests students’ knowledge of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills, although not all four skills will be tested at the end of every module.
At Key stage 4, students complete two Controlled Written Assessments in Year 10, and 2 Controlled Speaking Assessments in Year11. They are tested on Listening and Reading skills by means of an exam. Students have two attempts at this exam, in January and June of Year 11.
At Key Stage 5, students are assessed at AS Level by means of a Listening, Reading and Writing exam and a Speaking exam at the end of the first year of the course. At A2 Level, they are assessed by means of a Listening, Reading and Writing exam and a Speaking exam at the end of the second year of the course.
Homework
Homework tasks are set once a week. At Key stage 3, students may be expected to complete a worksheet, do a piece of writing or learn vocabulary.
At Key Stage 4, students will be given worksheets, written tasks, preparation for Controlled Assessments, revision for exams or vocabulary learning.
At Key Stage 5, students will be given worksheets, written tasks, exam preparation, revision for exams or vocabulary learning.
