Welcome to the Sixth Form

The Sixth Form at Handsworth Wood Girls’ School is now at a new and exciting phase of its development. Building on our sustained success in raising achievement in KS4 over the past seven years, we have now introduced a brand new curriculum providing a wider range of level 2 and level 3 courses for all types of learners. Our aspirations for our students are extremely high: we want them all to achieve a good range of qualifications so that they can move on to study at university, access level 3 courses at FE college or take up employment with good career opportunities. In many ways, Handsworth Wood Girls’ School is able to offer a unique experience in that it combines the flexibility of a college experience with the support and range of opportunities of a school.

Today, students are continuing their education in increasing numbers and are enjoying an even wider range of courses both at Key Stage 4 and in the Sixth Form. The choice of courses at Handsworth Wood Girls’ School is further enhanced by the Titan Partnership of schools in north-west Birmingham, of which the school is a part. This partnership enables us to offer students real diversity both in their subject choices and learning preferences.

The school’s motto is “Aspiring for Excellence.” Success can only be achieved through a commitment to studies, working in partnership with each student, her family and the school. Academic progress is carefully monitored and there are regular reports home. Students are supported and encouraged to use their time in school profitably and wisely and we have work spaces and laptops available for them. As their time in the Sixth Form progresses, students are supported to assume more responsibility for their own learning in preparation for Higher or Further Education and employment. To support this, we are able to offer students good accommodation facilities, high quality teaching and learning and a Sixth Form support team to cater for applications to university through UCAS, and to offer study support, mentoring and advice.

We encourage our students to get involved in school life and there are numerous opportunities for students to take part in activities such as Arts Leadership courses, Young People’s Parliament, taking assemblies as well as working with younger students in the school.

We believe that our Sixth Form will provide the right opportunities for your daughter to achieve success. We have a team of staff in the Sixth Form who are very experienced, a personalized curriculum and individual support for all students.
