Scottish University Mottos

In this section of the website we are going to be taking a look at several of the universities that are based up in Scotland and will be looking at each of their official motto’s. Please do take a look through this listing and each universities official motto, as you may never know when that information will come in useful. The motto of a school can give you clues into what kind of an atmosphere and culture is cultivated.

If you are a student then you are bound to find, when taking part in a quiz night one of the questions may be related to the motto’s of one or more universities, so make a mental note of the following information as you will never know when it will come in handy at a later date!

University of St Andrews – “Ever to excel” is the official motto of the University of St Andrews. There is a common mistake that the official motto is “Unity through strength,” but the official motto “Ever to excel,” or AIEN ARISTEUIEN / Aίέυ άριστέυειυ in Latin, dates back to 1700s! The University of St Andrews was founded in 1413, showing you that mottoes are often adopted later in the life of a university.

University of Glasgow – The official motto of the University of Glasgow if you do not already know it is: The way, the truth, and the life.

University of Aberdeen – One of the most religious mottoes of any university in Scotland is the one that is found at the University of Scotland for their official motto is: The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord.

University of Strathclyde – “The Place of Useful Learning” is the rather straight to the point official motto of the University of Strathclyde!

University of Dundee – Up in Dundee the official motto of the University of Dundee is: “My soul glorifies the Lord”, or “My soul doth magnify the Lord”, depending on which translation of Latin you use.

University of Stirling – One of the shortest mottoes is found over at the University of Stirling and being so short you are unlikely to forget it and the motto for reference is: Innovation and Excellence.

Edinburgh Napier University – We quite like the motto of the Edinburgh Napier University for it is something of a well thought out if not unusual motto which is: “Without knowledge all is in vain.”

The Robert Gordon University – If you are ever taking part in a quiz and you are asked what the motto of the Robert Gordon University is, then the answer to that question is: “Now by all your mastered arts.”

Glasgow Caledonian University – “For the common good” is the official motto of the Glasgow Caledonian University which is another straight to the point and no nonsense type of motto!

University of the West of Scotland – The final motto from a Scottish university that we would like to draw your attention to is the motto of the University of the West of Scotland which is: “To achieve through hard work.”
